Women and Family Collaboration in 19th Century Kyoto’

Mary Louise Nagata, Francis Marion University

This paper focuses on women’s contribution to family prosperity. In his research on ‘merchant federations’ (1988) Nakano Takashi noted that all members of the family were expected to contribute to the business activities of the family firm, and I have recently published on women as entrepreneurs. This paper will take a closer look at women’s roles using legal depositions, records of headship succession, and providing for the needs of the business, employees and family.
